FLYING

 SEASON 1 EPISODE 2 - FLYING

Parent Content Warning:

Summary (Spoilers, obviously):

Eleanor realizes that her behavior is causing the disruption in the Good Place neighborhood and begs for Chidi's help to hide her and help her become a better person.  Michael calls a neighborhood meeting and the problem starts to resolve itself.  Chidi tells Eleanor she may be too selfish to truly learn to be better.  We see several flashbacks from Eleanor's life, showing that indeed she does have a history of selfishness.  Chidi volunteers Eleanor to clean up the neighborhood rather than experience flying with the other residents.  She ends up choosing to conceal trash to jump into flying, and again, disaster ensues.  Chidi decides he can't help Eleanor after all because she's just too selfish to change.  Eleanor stays up all night cleaning up the neighborhood, and Chidi says he will help her because she's shown herself capable of change.  Chidi moves into Eleanor's house to conceal their "good person" lessons.  Eleanor receives an anonymous note telling her "You Don't Belong Here" - who could have sent it?

Discussion Points and Readings:

1. When Eleanor comes to Chidi at 2:55, we see that Chidi's chalkboard is full of philosophical ruminations...for HIM.  He asks himself if he has a moral imperative to help, if helping Eleanor will cause greater harm to the community and most importantly he asks if morality can even be taught.  He clearly is experiencing a crisis of conscience.  Can morality be taught as a school subject or does training in morality need to be part of the process of growing up to truly become part of a person's outlook?  Aristotle says yes, that practice improves any skill, and others disagree.  What do you think?

2.  Tahani is really struggling with being soulmates with a silent Buddhist monk.  Those who take silent vows for a short period or even for life do so to meditate on larger mysteries - this is not common but sometimes practiced in the Catholic priesthood or Buddhism.  Could you take a vow of silence?

3.  Eleanor cleans up the neighborhood because she feels guilty about what she did and her bad choices.  Chidi praises her as taking a good first step, but claims a further improvement would be what?
